Marc-Oliver Pahl on Trusted AI in Defense

Marc-Oliver Pahl publishes on AI and defense

In the face of rising cyberthreats and the rise of artificial intelligence, the issue of trust in technology is becoming central, particularly in the defense sector. The Cyber center of excellence has published a reference work on the subject, bringing together the viewpoints of researchers and players in the field. Among them, Prof. Marc-Oliver Pahl, holder of the Cyber CNI Chair at IMT Atlantique, offers an enlightening analysis of the contributions and challenges of AI.

An initiative of the Cyber center of excellence

The Cyber center of excellence has brought together top experts for a publication dedicated to trusted artificial intelligence (AI) applied to defense. This initiative, coordinated by Karl Neuberger (Vice President at Capgemini Invent France) and Olivier Denti (Data / AI Director at Capgemini Invent France), brings together 28 articles written by specialists in the cyber field.

The aim is clear: to offer a panorama of current issues linked to trusted AI in sensitive areas, such as defense. This approach encourages dialogue between researchers, manufacturers and operational staff on ethical, technical and strategic issues.

Prof. Marc-Oliver Pahl on AI in cybersecurity

Prof. Marc-Oliver Pahl, holder of the Cyber CNI Chair at IMT Atlantique, has written a remarkable article. Entitled “The influence of AI on cybersecurity: challenges and opportunities from a research point of view”, his text provides an in-depth analysis of the transformations brought about by AI in the sector.

He explains that cyber attackers are already using AI to automate and sophisticate their attacks. For example, they exploit adaptive malware or spread AI-generated disinformation. At the same time, AI also offers powerful levers for defense :

  • Real-time anomaly detection
  • Threat anticipation
  • Simulation of attacks via digital twins
  • Dynamic adaptation of security policies

These tools make it possible to envisage a more proactive cybersecurity approach, driven by artificial intelligence.

The key issue : building trust in AI

One of the central points of Prof. Pahl’s article concerns trust. He points out that, despite their performance, AI systems often remain opaque. Yet, in critical contexts, it is essential to understand their decisions. AI must therefore be explainable and aligned with human values.

To this end, the Cyber CNI Chair has launched JudgeGPT, an experimental initiative. It tests the effects of AI-generated misinformation in a controlled environment, in order to measure its impact on human behavior.

A contribution in keeping with the values of the Cyber CNI Chair

Prof. Pahl’s participation is fully in line with the mission of the Cyber CNI Chair. It aims to bring academic research closer to industrial realities. It also illustrates the driving role played by the Chair in the major strategic reflections on AI and cybersecurity.

Conclusion: towards responsible AI for a secure future

In a world where threats are evolving as fast as technologies, a better understanding of the uses of AI in cybersecurity is becoming crucial. Prof. Marc-Oliver Pahl’s article sheds valuable light on these changes. It reminds us that only trusted AI, used responsibly and transparently, can sustainably strengthen the resilience of critical systems.

The Cyber CNI Chair will continue to be at the forefront of these challenges, between technological innovation and societal responsibility.
